We started at the top of Guanella Pass, 11,600 feet and followed the South Park Trail up 600 feet through high-alpine scenery to Square Top Lakes.
The entire trail remained above the treeline and provided a lovely panoramic view which included one of Colorado’s 14’ers – Mt. Bierstadt.
The 4.2 mile round-trip hike led us through the tundra peppered with wildflowers to two lakes where we stopped for lunch and caught a glimpse of three shaggy mountain goats before they disappeared over the ridge line.
We couldn’t have asked for a better day. The clear, crisp morning required a light jacket until our heart rate got pumping in the high altitude. We finished the hike well before any worry of an afternoon shower! ETB
