While I’ve been to many Caribbean Islands, either things have changed, or Anguilla is a little different from some of the others I’ve visited. For starters, I don’t ever remember needing so much cash! Below are some tips for traveling to Anguilla.
Useful Tips for Traveling to Anguilla
- Anguilla is a British Overseas Territory and follows the English driving system on the LEFT side of the road
- Anguilla is 16 miles long. Rent a car for exploring the island. Taxis operate by zones and it is $32 to go from one side of the island to the other. Taxis are fine for staying in one zone only.
- According to one taxi drive, there is only “one road in a lollipop shape that covers the whole island with no splits.” From the ferry dock to my hotel I counted three splits. “Those are just turn offs,” he said. I don’t know, see the map below!
- Anguilla uses the Eastern Caribbean Currency or the US Dollar. I had sticker shock when I saw a carton of eggs was priced at $9 until I found out at the register is was in EC. Currently, $1US = 2.70 EC
- Cash is king. Taxis, meals under $25, and departures taxes all require cash! Having said that, a meal with a drink on the beach will likely cost more than $25.
- It’s possible for people to send money to Haiti and other Caribben Islands like Anguilla using money transfer services. This includes cash pickups. If you’ve underbudgeted your trip to Anguilla this could be a useful service to look into.
- A 15% service charge, which is the tip, is included on most bills. Bumping it up slightly is OK
- Shoal Bay has an amazing walking beach and the area is relatively quiet. Be sure to watch the sunset!
- Cheapest place to eat on the beach in Shoal Bay is Uncle Ernies
- People in Shoal Bay are friendly. I walked to the grocery store and a lady who was late to work picked me up. A man who worked at the Zemi hotel next door to my condos picked me up on the way back. He actually drives a taxi too. Calvin: 264-581-9277, calvintaxiservice@hotmail.com. Obviously, use discretion, when accepting a ride.
