Often referred to as the “cradle of humanity” and bigger than the USA, Canada, and India combined, Africa is quite a marvelous continent to visit. Going on wildlife safaris, mountain trekking, or taking in local culture are just a few of the many things you can do when visiting Africa. As the second-most populous continent in the world, Africa is home to an incredible diversity of cultures and people, and you are sure to come away with a marvelous impression of those who call Africa home.

The wildlife experiences are unparalleled, and you will be in awe of the marvelous animals that live there. Not to mention the natural wonders, from sparkling rivers to massive waterfalls and breathtaking mountains the landscape does not disappoint. A trip to Africa is one worth taking. Below, you can find out more about each of these fascinating countries located all throughout Africa. Whatever you pick, it is sure to be a wonderful experience. Happy travels!

Botswana

If you’re looking for a safari or wildlife destinations, one of the best places to visit in Africa is Botswana. Botswana is known for its wonderful Chobe National Park, which was Botswana’s first national park, and has one of the highest concentrations of wildlife. From birds, to hippos, to leopards climbing trees, and lions watching over their cubs, the wildlife viewing is spectacular. While you’re there, you can also take a boat safari on the Chobe River and observe the elephants crossing the river. Botswana is home to a resident pack of endangered wild dogs. If you are lucky enough to see them hunt, you will never forget the adrenaline rush!

Zambia and Zimbabwe

Be sure to tack on Zambia and Zimbabwe while visiting Botswana. They are in close proximity and you can’t miss the magnifcient Victoria Falls, which is one of the world’s largest waterfalls. Be sure to visit the falls from both sides of the river for many beautiful vantage points. Additionally, time your visit in order to delight in the the incredible rainbows created the powerful spray. The falls are also breathtaking from above. Don’t miss a microlight flight or helicopter journey which is an exhilerating experience. Both adrenaline junkies and photographers will delight in a visit to Victoria Falls. Finally, leopard lovers may want to spend a few extra days on safari in Zambia, as it has a high concentration of these elusive and solitary cats.

Kenya

Kenya is another wonderful choice for a safari. Both Kenya and Tanzania host the great migration where you can see the wildebeest cross the river as crocodiles lay in waiting. The expansive plains attract the cheetah which you likely won’t see in Botswana, Zambia, or Zimbabwe. Also, there are many conservation-focused wildlife experiences in Kenya. While here, you can stop by the Giraffe Center, which is an interactive conservation center where visitors have the opportunity to spend time with and learn about the endangered Rothschild’s giraffes. Another highlight is the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which is a rescue and rehabilitation center for orphaned elephants before returning them to the wild. If you stop by Kenya, you’re sure to see the power of conservation in this wonderful African country.

Rwanda

Rwanda is also a great spot for you to stop if you’re looking to go mountain trekking or take in cultural experiences. Many often refer to Rwanda as the “Land of a Thousand Hills” as it contains incredible mountains and valleys, the most well-known being the Virunga Mountains. These mountains are home to the mountain gorilla, an incredible species. While the permits are pricey, the trek to see a troop of gorillas with a silver back, mamas, and babies is worth it! And the money supports Rwanda’s heavy conservation efforts toward the magnificent mountain gorillas.

When in Rwanda, be sure to save a day for the capital, Kigali. The Kigali Genocide Memorial explains the history of Rwanda as it remembers the victims of the tragic 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. It is quite a moving experience.

Morocco

Another fantastic country in Africa is Morocco, where you can explore the vibrant markets, immerse yourself in the incredible culture, and trek through beautiful landscapes. The High Atlas Mountains, which are the highest and most dramatic portion of the North African Atlas mountain range are home to many Berber villages, which are historic indigenous settlements. Take a multi-day, village to village trek over spectacular terrain to see these locals daily routines.

Be sure to put Marrakesh and Essaouira on your itinerary. These two colorful Moroccan cities were my favorite. Definitely hire a guide to visit the medina in Marrakesh. That way you can wend deeply into the chaotic market to get the true feeling of the local life. Shoppers will be happy to get a better deal than on the touristy outskirts. And Essaouira’s port, filled with its trademark blue wooden boats is a photographers dream. Just like the seagulls, I could have spent all day watching the fisherman do their daily chores!

My African safaris have topped all my world travels. I know it will be the same for you!
