Argentina is the perfect place to go if you’re looking for a trip with a little bit of everything. From bustling city streets to glacier-filler national parks, visiting Argentina is a trip that everyone should experience at least once in their life. In the articles below, you can find out more by following my journey through Argentina. While on this trip, I was lucky to be able to participate in phenomenal hiking trails and see some scenic waterways, as well as see the towns that showcase a different side of Argentina.
Buenos Aires & Ushuaia
The best place to begin on your Argentina journey is in Buenos Aires and Ushuaia. Both of these cities are full of rich local history. Since Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina, it is a great place for you to start. Here, you can find bustling streets, beautiful architecture, and local cuisine. Some highlights here are the Recoleta Cemetery, where you can see incredible architecture firsthand; Plaza San Martín, an incredible public space where you can see how urban architecture blends with natural landscapes; and El Ateneo Grand Splendid, which is iconic for being the world’s most beautiful bookstore. In Ushuaia, you won’t be seeing bustling city streets, but you will get to see the natural landscape of Argentina. Since this city is the southernmost city on the planet, the untouched landscape that exists in this city will make you feel as if you really are at the edge of the world. The Beagle Channel is a must-see, as its location on the extreme southern tip makes it an encapsulating experience. Ushuaia’s Tierra del Fuego National Park is another great stop, as it is the only national park in the world that combines marine, mountain, and sub-Antartic forest environments. Both Buenos Aires and Ushuaia are great stops if you’re looking to experience what makes Argentina so phenomenal.
El Chaltén & El Calafate
Another great town to stop by is El Chaltén. This Argentinian town is one of Patagonia’s premier hiking destinations and is a great location for you to visit if you’re looking to hike through the beauty of Argentina. El Chaltén has trails for simple walks to full-day adventures. Whatever you’re looking for, you are sure to find it! A longer trek you could take would be the Laguna Torre, which features glacial lakes, floating icebergs, and spectacular views of Cerro Torre, a beautiful South American mountain. If you’re not up to a longer trek, you can follow shorter trails to Mirador de Los Cóndores, Mirador de las Águilas, and El Chorrillo del Salto. Even though these trails are shorter, you aren’t missing out on anything—the scenery along these paths is breathtaking.
A great destination to pair with El Chaltén is El Calafate. Both of these destinations are located in Patagonia and provide unique ways to experience Argentina. In El Chaltén, you get to experience wonderful active adventures. In El Calafate, you will get to experience a more relaxed adventure, full of beautiful glacier excursions. While you’re in El Calafate, you can relax with phenomenal lakeside walks, delicious local restaurants, and plenty of shopping. These cities make a great pair so you can experience the iconic hiking of El Chaltén while also getting to take in the wonderful glaciers of El Calafate.
