Well my weekend in Vail turned out to be a little lackadaisical after I sprained my ankle on my first hike Friday, but it was still enjoyable, and I will definitely be back to explore the area more. Maybe even later this year.

My tennis peeps and I headed out for a weekend in Buena Vista and had a great time! We wandered the town, soaked in the Mount Princeton Hot Springs, relaxed at the house, visited St. Elmo (a ghost town) and of course, hiked. Today Ken and I took the dogs to Hildebrand Ranch for a wonderful five-mile stroll. The park is part of Jeffco County Open Space located in Littleton, Colorado. The simple five-mile loop starts from the parking lots and leads hikers through a wide open meadow of wild flowers. The trail undulates along the plains and hogback and eventually reaches a residential area by a small pond where the well marked trail zigzags back and forth until it reaches the ranch again. Of all the activities we completed in the Pantanal, river floating, games drives, hiking, and horseback riding, Piranha fishing might have been the most fun. I really wanted to fish for Piranha simply to be able to say I’ve done it. Ruth and Alice, the other girl on our tour were not sold on participating, especially when we saw locals standing chest deep in water fishing for these sharp toothed critters. Along with the game drives in the Pantanal, we participated in other activities like hiking and horseback riding. Our first morning in the Patanal, we took a game drive to the docks, a boat ride to an island, and then a hike in the woods, across a boardwalk and to a tower for a view of the sweeping swamp. We spent three days in the Pantanal at Pousada Piuval. Our guides liked this 7,000 hectare ranch as it is home to the most jaguars at this time of year (which isn’t many) compared to the jaguar preserve that is not accessible at the end of the rainy season. Anyway, that didn’t stop us from looking for them. We took sunrise and sunset drives every day. Most of the time we drove the few roads on the ranch, occasionally we tried a few fields that were still to wet, and we also went to the park. Continue reading “Game Drives in the Pantanal”
Gasparetour picked us up in Cuiabá at 8am in the morning. Alex and Rachel drove us a few hours to Chapada dos Guimarães National Park for some hiking.

I bought a National Parks pass at the end of last year, and haven’t used it too much. As such, without dog sitting this weekend, I wanted get a hike in at Rocky Mountain National Park as dogs aren’t allowed on the trails. The nice part about winter in Colorado is I can hike in the afternoon without the threat of a thunderstorm which is quite the opposite in the summer time. As a result, I’ve been enjoying the fading light on my recent outings.
Today Maybel and I took a road trip to Ron Stewart Preserve at Rabbit Mountain which is part of Boulder, County Open Space. The park located in the eastern most foothills of Boulder County boasts 6.2 miles of trails.
I started out following the gravel road on Indian Mesa Trail that rose to an intersection with Eagle Wind Trail. The rocky terrain was easy to navigate as the elevation gain was minimal…around 350 feet. The Eagle Wind Trail is a 2.5 lollipop loop that provides expansive views of the valley below and a panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains beyond.
Countless hikers were out enjoying the warm weather prior to the incoming storm. We shared the trail and eventually descended toward the parking lot as the sunset. What a nice, peaceful outing! ETB
