Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark

The Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark, located in the Bighorn National Forest, is absolutely fascinating to me and extremely sacred to Native Americans.  In fact, the Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark was so interesting to me, that I returned twelve years later to see it again. Given I rarely go the same place twice, that’s saying a lot!

I can’t really explain why I find the Medicine Wheel so interesting, except that I was completely surprised by the limestone rocks that form a circle 80 feet in diameter during my first visit.  I can’t imagine being the first settler to discover the Medicine Wheel, with 28 rock spokes radiating from a center cairn, spread across the northwest ridge of a mountain at nearly 9,700 feet!

How to Get to Mirror Lake and Lost Twin Lakes

Mirror Lake and Lost Twin Lakes are located in the Cloud Peak Wilderness portion of the Big Horn National Forest near Buffalo, Wyoming.  The lakes are accessed via Trail #65 from the West Tensleep Trailhead.

There is a large dirt parking lot, pit toilets, and a few picnic tables at the trailhead located at the end of West Tensleep Road.  West Tensleep Road is a very popular camping area.  Free, designated sites line the road and are available on a first come first served basis.  There are also a few basic campgrounds.

So far, the hike to Mirror Lake and Lost Twin Lakes has been my favorite of the season.  It definitely earns FIVE STARS on AllTrails.  Somehow, I doubt it will be topped, but I have many more hikes in Wyoming to complete.

Happy Hiking: Sherd Lake Trail

Sherd Lake Trailhead is located off Circle Park Road in the Cloud Peak Wilderness of Big Horn National Forest near Buffalo, Wyoming.  Normally the moderate, 3.5 mile roundtrip hike leaves from a small dirt parking area with a pit toilet.

Currently, due to all the precipitation in Wyoming, Circle Park Road is closed at the entrance gate off Highway 16.  The closure adds 4.5 miles to the hike, though much of the additional distance may be covered via a connector trail after walking a mile down the road.

Pintler Scenic Byway – Phillipsburg to Anaconda

So, I camped off the dirt road going to the Glacier Lake Trailhead for few nights while I hiked in Flathead National Forest.  I had little shade, but great cell service which was a pleasant surprise in the wilderness.  A car coming down from the Glacier Lake Trail stopped to warn me that a bear just ran by VANgo!  Ugh, I’m so sad I missed it!!  Annie growled at something, but I did not see a thing.  It’s amazing how quiet they can be.

Anyway, from Condon, I took the scenic route to Butte in Southwestern Montana.  I passed by Seeley Lake which I visited on my road trip across the USA 11 years ago and then dropped down into Drummond where I picked up the Pintler Scenic Byway.

Things to Do in Eureka

After my three weeks of exploring Northern Idaho, I headed east to Montana. From Bonners Ferry, I took Highway 2 to Libby and then connected to Highway 37, also known as the Lake Kookanusa Scenic Byway which travels 67 miles to Eureka.

I don’t know how I missed this section of the USA eleven years ago while on my year long road trip across the USA connecting 120 different scenic byways listed in a Reader’s Digest Book.

Somehow, this National Forest Scenic Byway didn’t make it in the book, and it is spectacular.  Had I realized how pretty it would be, I would have spent the whole day driving it, rather than just a few hours.

Three Weeks in Northern Idaho

A year ago, May, I spent 3 weeks in Idaho…mostly the bottom half of it.  This July, I made it to the top half of Idaho, and spent another 3 weeks exploring.  I didn’t pull out the French fries and ketchup costume for the state sign challenge, because I figure I only need to do that once, but the state sign in Idaho is easy to find!

This time while in Idaho, I visited Stanley, Wallace and Bonners Ferry.  I had briefly visited Stanley (which is really central Idaho) over 11 years ago on my year long road trip around the USA, and I visited Coeur d’Alene last fall for a weekend, but beyond that I haven’t spent much time in this part of the state.

Hikes in Stanley, Idaho

The last time I visited Stanley, Idaho was eleven years ago.  I had hoped to visit last year during my three weeks in Idaho, but I was too early as it was still snowing.  Considering I should have named my blog, Chasing 70 Degrees, snow is not in my future if I can help it.

Anyway, I finally arrived and spent several days camping and hiking in Stanley and and caught up with a few relatives.

Hiking Silas Lakes Trail

If you are following along on my road trip journey, you know that I changed campsites last night from Hugh Otte Camping Area to a more secluded area off of 302.  I’m now in a high meadow with a few other big rigs in sight, but not too close.  I am parked by Townsend Creek which runs through the willows.  I awoke to a foghorn type sound at 5:30am!

I could only liken it to a cow, but upon peering out VANgo’s window, I did not see any animals.  On the other hand, Annie was trembling with excitement as she stared outside.  Knowing she sees something and I don’t is sometimes disconcerting!  I guessed that maybe a moose was tucked in the willows, but by the time I returned in the afternoon, there was a herd of cows lining the Louis Lake Road, so perhaps I heard a “moo” after all!

Things to Do in Jupiter

Jupiter is the northernmost town in Palm Beach County and has a population of 61,000.  The beach town is rated one of the top and happiest in the USA.  Its barrier island is ranked as having the highest per capita income of any place in the country.  It is home to the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Celine Dion.  While I did drive down the street of mansions blocked by high bushes, naturally I didn’t boondock nearby!
